I've often wondered what the markings on some of the German made guns meant. I found out that they stand for the year of manufacturer. A - I stand for the numbers 0 - 9. So my Feinwerkbau AW93 has an AI meaning it was made in 08. My SP-20 has an AJ meaning it was made in 09, and my H&K USP has an AH meaning it was made in 07. I looked at my Sig Sauer P228 - no markings.

That's odd, I understood that the German marking scheme excluded "J" for some odd reason. I would have understood skipping the "I" as it looks like "1", but the reason for the missing J escaped me. Perhaps it's specific to Walther. I've attached a link that shows some of the proof marks. www.whog.org/ppk/markings.htm

Whoops, you are right of course, and I noticed it at the range today while shooting the SP-20. It says AK. So now my memory is going too.
