Reading TMan's thread on copper fouling and the abbreviation "bbl" for barrel, though common, struck me as odd. brl or bl would make some sense, but I don't understand the 2 "b"s.
Is there some reason similar to lead (Pb) or pound (lb)?

lead=Pb the elemental symbol from the periodic table is Pb. Pb is the abbreviation from the latin word plumbum.
as for pound = lb. I'm a little rusty, but I recall something about lb being a short for libra = scale. pound came from pondo, again Latin, but I can't remember what it means.

Well I'm clueless, but I noticed when making database additions for Thompson Center barrels that it is always BBL when it is just the barrel. Wait - maybe is is for "blued barrel"?

I knew about lead and pound, wondered if there was some latin for barrel that I was missing.

Well I was all wet with " Blued Barre L". I suddenly thought to look it up in Google and found wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn?s=bbl that it is the standard abbreviation for barrel, but there isn't a standard for the volume that the barrel contains. A barrel of oil is 42 gallons, but a barrel of beer is only 31 gallons. Hey, what is with that? Beer drinkers should revolt!!! Well, I guess a lot of them are revolting enough.

Now a mildly interesting beer anecdote: So I was in Dublin, Republic of Ireland, and I was all excited about having a Guinness fresh from the brewery (about .5 miles from where I was having dinner), so I ordered one, even for the ridiculously steep price of 3 Euros. Sure enough, out came a glass and a DRAFT CAN LIKE I CAN GET AT FREAKING HOME. And while we're on the topic of abbreviations, my favourite is TINSTAAFL: there is no such thing as a free lunch

With a daughter in school. I have had to learn (crash course) in abreviations. She would rather text me than call because it is faster! The real reason is.......as fast as she can text I cant get a word in at all and I am stuck 5 questions back till I just type "Call Me" lol G

With 6" scars on both wrists from severe Carpal Tunnel surgery many years ago I cannot do the text stuff as its too small for my old paws to work with. I have told all of my friends never to text me as they will not get a answer ever. Call me and I will talk to them instead.
