These are not completely original thoughts but are my first hand observations. After a few of months of unsanctioned tactical competitions and a sanctioned IDPA match, I did a sanctioned USPSA match. Since it is close to the time of Florida State Match, several of the real race gunners appeared. It was interesting to see the tricked out .38 Super race guns with compensators, red dots and race holsters. I was there with my stock Glock 22 and a discount bin Fobus holster. It was impressive and humbling to see at least four of them put 18 shots in six different targets with a mandatory reload in under 11 seconds. Most of the shots were in the A zone. It is worth noting that several of the race guns had a least one malfunction during the evening. My Glock has never even hiccupped in the time I have been competing. While the atmosphere was more serious and competitive than friendly, I didn’t feel out of place. It was great fun and a great learning experience. I know it was valuable for me and I intend on doing more matches whenever I am able. I may even get better at it.

Those split times on the sponsored guns might be contributed to the malfunctions on the comped pistols. When a pistol begins gumming up with fouling, the smoothness in it's movements retards the speed of a pistol that came in shooting clean. Also, some recoil springs begin loosing strength after 1,000. rds of shooting, as do some shooters when their wrist begin to tire. It does pay to have a sponser in the USPSA matches; one of the original intentions behind the founding of the IDPA was to give the average non professional a game to participate in. At one time Glock was sponsoring their own matches, but one had to have a Glock to enter.

Glock still sponsors their own matches. I have the cap, the magazine and the patch but have never shot a match. I hope to next year. www.GSSFonline.com/

tpt; I hear, that unless you have been actively involved in the Glock matches before, you can sign up in a lower ranking class of shooters and come out with a new Glock as the prize.

Coincidentally I got my GFFS info for the new year in the mail yesterday after we had posted. It is true that Glock gives away quite a few handguns at their matches. If you have a high ranking in USPSA or IDPA it does affect where you are ranked.
