Okay I am curious about some thing. I am generally carry in a duty holster and have always carried with a thumb break top. I normally carry in a Gould & Goodrich Galaxy DuraPro III Holster while on duty. Now I also carried my back up in a ankle holster that also has a thumb snap on top of it. I am starting to carry more off duty and I am wondering if any one has had problems with open top holsters? What I mean by problems is guns coming loose or God for bid falling out of the holster. I have a hard time when the guy who carries his in a pancake holster with a thumb snap that the open top holsters will hold tight enough. Sorry so long.
To summarize open top holster for Concealed Carry good or bad?

Lukie; I have alot of confidence in the open top "Concealable" from Galco. I have carried 1911s, Sig Sauers, and small frame revolvers in these open tops with no problems. For pancake style holsters, with the thumb snaps, I have a couple of the Bianchi #8 holsters for the mid frame Python and S&W 686. The open top "Lo-Profile" Wilson Combat holsters retain the pistol also, which also features a full inner side which covers the length of the pistol next to the body. I have many different holsters for the same guns, open top and thumb snap; I find the thumb snap allows the pistol to fit looser in the holster, making for a smoother draw. The open tops secure the pistol by means of pressure and shape, with some using internal retainers on the trigger guard. With most of the open tops I have, they ride closer to the body with less printing than most of the thumb release strap holsters. Two of my favorite thumb snap holsters is the Bianchi 19 L and the Cyclone. Galco's open top laminated horsehide holsters do have good retainment , while providing fairly good deployment. None of these holsters provide very much advantage without the use of the proper belt.

I used to carry almost exclusively with a thumbstrab. Now, I work very hard to find holsters w/o them. My finding is that most open top leather holsters are very tight when first bought and you have to break them in just to make the gun fit all the way in. They seem to hold the gun quite well.
Also, most of my open top leather holsters are Galco or Safariland, and almost all have a tension screw that allows you to adjust how tight the gun is held, so again, no thumb strab is no problem for me.

I'll second (third?) the Galco products. My "Fletch" OWB is fitted to the gun, does not have a retention adjustment, but holds on nicely.
My Mitch Rosen IWB for the PPK/S is also fitted to the gun. This one is a tuckable version and is essentially invisible to the uninitiated.

Have a Kramer for my Kahr K40, a Milts Sparks for my Walther P5, a Fist for S&W 4513 TSW and a Horseshoe Leather for a Sig 239. All open top, all crossdraw and all holds as tight as when they were new. (oldest is about 5 years) Used to carry my Smith 11hrs a day/6 days a week when I was working. You can never go wrong by buying from a top holster maker. Of course, Kydex never changes shape either.

Sorry Luke, brain fart. The "Fletch" has a thumb break. Regardless, it fits snug enough that I wouldn't worry about it comming out. The Mitch Rosen IWB for the PPK/S is molded as well.
I'd think that any open top holster, molded to your particular gun from a quality manufacturer would make you comfortable.

I love the holster, but have been thinking recently of picking up a higher quality rig.
