I've heard several different opinions regarding the use of recoil buffers in the 1911s and although Bill Wilson was always an advocate for buffers, Wilson advises against the use of a buffer in the 4" inch compact models they produce because of it's shorter recoil.
I've been using recoil buffers in my own 1911s since 1996 and haven't experienced any malfunctions. I reckon it's a matter of choice, replacing the recoil spring at proper intervals , and using the correct ammunition.

DA, wasn't there some other type of 1911 that you shouldn't use a buffer on? Was it the Gold Cup?

However, I installed and modified the 3 1/2" Colt Officer and added a Full Length Rod and Inner & Outer Dual Buffer Pads; Called "Cominolli " The Frame Saver Rod.
I'm still Gold Cup Buffer all Colt.handgunforum.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=show&action=display&thread=2214
