One of my project 1911s started with this original Series 70 Colt Combat Government Model.
During the early 80s when Colt dominated the 1911 industry, as being the primary American manufacturer of the 1911, a new version of the Government Model was being demanded. The Combat Government model was introduced, featuring a lowered and flared ejection port, like that of the Gold Cup, a raised rear sight, front patridge target sight, throated barrel chamber, polished feed ramp, tunneled magazine well, and accuracy of within 1" point of aim using 5 different brands of ammunition at a distance of 50 feet. This new offering was hailed as being the 1911 Government that was ready for IPSC games, right out of the box.
I was very fortunate to find one of these original treasures , with all it's original parts, including it's original Collet Bushing, packmayr grips, and original magazine.
This gun was designed as a shooter, and I felt that it needed some updated modifications. The collet bushing was replaced with an Ed Brown, an Ed Brown high ride beaver tail grip safety was fitted to the frame, new Wolff springs were added, including an 18 1/2 lb. recoil spring, new mainspring, firing pin spring, and sear spring. The hammer was replaced with one called, the "Speed Demon",from Nowlin, which is manufactured from harden stainless steel with a narrowed half cock notch, the disconnector was replaced with a Briley, the sear was replaced by the ultra hard steel of EGW's Competition sear, with an Rc hardness of 60-61, and the trigger was replaced with that of a fitted Dlask, which features an ultra light magnesium shoe and titanium stirrup. I then installed a King's extended thumb safety, checkered slide stop, and barrel link. The last remaining item was to install a Nowlin full length guide rod with reversed plug, shok buffer, hex head grip screws, new grips, and fine tuned the pistol at the range. The idiot mark on the frame came as a pre-owned feature.
