The 2009 deer season (gun) begins in Texas on Saturday.
I was wondering what the season was in other parts of the country.
Here it runs from the first Saturday in November through the first Sunday in January. Archery season begins a month earlier than gun season, the first Saturday in October.
The peak of the rut is during this coming week in my part of Texas.
I will only be going out Opening Day and maybe a day or two later in the week. Anybody else deer hunting this year?

Funny you should mention it. Just before I checked in here I looked up the local "opening day". Ours is Nov 21 in this part of the state. Runs for about 3 weeks.
Not sure if I'll get out before then, as I hunt about an hour's drive away from home.

I gotta admit, sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. I got this 8-point at about 6:20 a.m. on Saturday. It was a very slow Opening Day, the guys hunting the neighboring place, about 6 of them, only came up with a spike. This guy walked through a spot where about a dozen feral hogs had bedded for the night, and he did not pick up the human scent until it was too late. I still don't much like the odds when I came upon a dozen or so hogs in the fog before dawn. Got up in that tree a bit quicker than usual...

Very Nice!! I'd be a bit leary too, seeing a bunch of hogs. In Ohio, there is no rifle season, and shotguns have the typical 3 round limit. Now, while a 1oz lead slug is plenty enough for a hog, but there is not enough of them in the tube, and could not be fired fast enough for me! On that thought, that would be one topheavy shotgun with an 8rd tube in it...

That's the nicest rack I've seen since lunch at Hooters!
No feral hogs here in Western New York, but for the past few years we have been able to use rifles. The Winchester 94 is much lighter and less bulky than the Rem870 that I used to carry.

Hogs are a huge problem down here. They reproduce at an insane rate and areas that they root out look like someone has gone insane with a roto-tiller. They can never be controlled by hunting, even though they can be hunted all year and there is no limit.
Traps seem to help control their population. I imagine it would be hard to poison them without killing game you want to keep.

I've only hunted with a shotgun one time, used a Remington 1100 with slugs or buckshot. Do not recall which load.
Most of the shots I get are 50 to just over 100 yards, so I'm more comfortable with a high-powered, scoped rifle. The scope's light-gathering ability extends my hunting day earlier and later.
This buck was about 70 or more yards out by the time I figured out he was legal (13-plus-inch inside spread). When I first saw him he was under 50 yards. I used a .270 Winchester with a 130-grain bullet. It's moving about 3,000 FPS at the muzzle.
It was so early that the scope turned red when I shot. It a new scope this year and the first time I've used it. I was a bit concerned, but it looked like it had held the zero from the range session just fine.

Reminded me how my son used to alsways tell me how we really needed to go to Hooters for the wings. Yeah, right!

Hard to tell in low light, but apparently he turned and let out a snort that let me know I better not think of following. I'm just standing there with the bolt open and no round in the chamber.

I am sitting here near lunchtime and now my mouth is watering!!!!! Thank you G That's why I waited until after lunch to send this link. These folks are Czechs and they really know what they are doing. They also process venison. I must have driven 25 or more miles to take my deer to them. Their pork products are found in Sam's Club and other regional stores. " Jak se mas?" means "How's it going?": www.slovacek.com/site/index.php
