Ft. Hood Shooter's handgun

I read a news report that said the Ft. Hood shooter had a revolver in one hand and a FN Herstal "Five-seveN" in the other. Reprtedly the FN Five Seven has a 20 round magazine and the shooter reloaded at least once. Any comments on this semi-auto?? I had never heard of it.

Shoots a small bullet really fast.(sorry I don't remember the speed/energy, etc, and the FN webapage isn't loading. Certain rounds are able to defeat most of the body armor on the market.
Supposed to have a really mild recoil, and like you said, large capacity magazines.


The news report I heard was that it was a powerful handgun favored by Mexican drug lords. Gee that isn't sensationalizing things, is it?

Records indicate Hasan bought the FN 5.7 at store called "Guns Galore" in Killeen, Texas, in recent months and that gun was used in the attack that left 13 people dead, one of the officials said. The pistol has been dubbed a "cop killer" by those who have tried to stop its use.
One of the law enforcement officials said that the second gun was an older model Smith & Wesson .357-caliber revolver, but the official added there's nothing so far to indicate the second weapon was fired. The official said the revolver was so old, investigators doubt it could be traced to a specific purchase.

The most powerful type of ammunition for the FN 5.7 gun is available only to law enforcement and military personnel. Gun control advocates call it a "cop killer" weapon because that ammo can pierce bulletproof vests, and its use by Mexican drug cartels worries police.

"We are very grateful to Senators [Frank] Lautenberg (D-N.J.), [Jon] Corzine (D-N.J.) and [Chuck] Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Congressman Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.) for introducing legislation in the Senate and the House of Representatives to outlaw this weapon," said Michael Barnes, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence united with the Million Mom March.

According to a Brady Campaign press release, the "easily concealable, lightweight handgun" retails for about $1,000.

The Brady Campaign says it bought a Five-seveN from a Virginia gun dealer in January, and it says ammunition purchased with the gun was able to penetrate a protective vest. (Virtually all rifle ammunition will penetrate the most common types of body armor worn by police.)
