I had gone up to see Becky at Sporting Arms to pick up something, don't remember what, and noticed that she had let all the hired help go because of things really slowing up. She mentioned that she had bought a lot of inventory when things became available after not being able to get guns for awhile. Now she has a lot in stock and a shortage of buyers.
I'd noticed that she had changed her mark-up on the Lewis Machine Tool AR's to 4% in order to try to move them. I looked at one, and they are nice, but didn't really knock my socks off.
She then mentioned that she had ordered a Wilson Combat AR-15 for a customer, who subsequently canceled the order. I'd never seen one before, so I asked her if I could look at it.
The next thing I remember is that my feet were cold. Probably because my socks were gone. This thing was beautiful. I really wanted to dry-fire it, but since I wasn't yet convinced that I was going to buy it I didn't. A few nanoseconds later I was convinced, and I did dry-fire it. I could not believe the trigger (single stage) on the gun. I've never seen a factory trigger on a black rifle that came anywhere close to this. I knew I wouldn't be able to shoot it for awhile, but there would come a day...
Today was the day. Yesterday the Pastor came over and pulled my dirty swimming pool filter out for me. We were wearing short sleeve shirts and were warm working in the sun. Today it is freezing. It was so bad on the firing line that I went inside to load the magazines. I'm sure with the wind chill factor and the fact we are in a valley it was close to zero.
Here is the picture my buddy took, and below that will be a few more additional comments:
As you can see from the picture it has both a front and rear sight. The rear is a single hole peep sight, and is adjustable, of course. Both sights fold down to be out of the way if you decide to use optics.
Out of sight on the left side is a loop attachment for a sling. There is a sling that comes with the rifle, along with instructions on how to use it. The sling is general purpose, will fit on any AR. I haven't been able to decipher the instructions yet. I think it is for carrying the rifle rather than being an aid in shooting.
The gun came with two magazines and a nylon case with multiple pouches on the side for carrying stuff.
There are a lot of technical details, which I won't repeat here, but are available on their web-site: www.wilsoncombat.com/r_ut-15_qr.asp
How well does it shoot? After some minor sight adjustment, I did get one good group before everything opened up. My buddy wasn't dressed as warmly as I was, and for once I actually shot better with it than he did. I think I was shaking a little too because of being nervous, or from too much booze, not sure which. (Like being married wasn't enough driving me to drink, the pain in my shoulder is killing my liver.)
I only have one other AR, which is the S&W M&P-15. It is not in the same league as this rifle. Whoops, just remembered I have the S&W 15-22 as well. (I only shot it once because the trigger really stinks).
If my calculations are correct, the retail on this Wilson is about $2500, so it is about twice the price of a "good" AR. Do I think it is worth it? You bet.
