DA, I think that was before my time. Well, I think the show was probably on when I was young, but we didn't have a TV. A couple of things my parents hid well from me were the fact that "Dad" was not my real father, and the second thing was: we were really poor. Mom always saw to it that I had nice clothes and plenty to eat. There were never any steaks, but I didn't care because I wouldn't eat meat anyhow. (I didn't start eating meat until I was in Vietnam and we were on A-rations). Although we had a large 3 apartment house (made into 4 apartments after mom sold it shortly after dad died) we didn't have a garage. Dad was a barber and rode the bus to work. "What do we need a car for - we don't even have a garage to put one in?" I never realized until I was older that the reason we didn't have things like a TV and car was because we didn't have the money for them.
I bought my first car when I returned from Vietnam, and shortly after that the barber that owned "University Barber Shop" retired and turned the business over to dad. Dad bought a Karmann Ghia. He died a couple of years later when my brother was 14. My brother has since told me that dad's driving was terrible - something I missed out on.
A couple of years after he died, the TV shop that I was working at part-time took a nice Zenith black&white TV in on trade. I bought it for mom for $100. She used it for several years before buying her first color TV.
I now have 4 cars and 4 TV's, but I sure wish I could watch some of those old westerns that I missed out on. Dad died in 69 and never got to see how successful his son became. After he got religion right after getting married, he headed off to a Bible College for 4 years before going to medical school. His kids have done extremely well too. Still awake? Have I bored you to tears? I'm going to go work on a Buckmark - I can't stand the trigger any longer, and I bought a new scope for it.
