I took Becky and one of her 14 year old daughters to the range today (she has 3 of them). Several years ago, Becky's husband took her to the range and let her shoot his 1911 Kimber in 45ACP. She hated it.
The first time I took her to the range, again several years ago, I let her shoot my Sig 220 Sport (no longer in production). She had no trouble shooting it.
She was a little nervous today when I pulled out the H&K MK23. I then demonstrated to her that I could shoot it without pain to my shoulder. She then put several rounds through it without any discomfort at all. Next she shot the CZ75 from the custom shop, and liked it too.
We then let her daughter shoot the Walther GSP and Feinwerkbau AW93. After she finished Becky shot her SIG 232, and didn't like it because she said the recoil hurt her hand. I then asked her if she wanted to shoot the CZ or the H&K again, and to my surprise, she picked the H&K shooting 45ACP.
Although in the past I typically would associate recoil with caliber, but I'm changing my mind. It is much more associated with the weight of the gun.

So many factors; caliber, charge, bullet weight, handgun weight, bore axis, action type...
I was similarly surprised comparing a Glock 21 (.45) to my Walther P99 in .40. The Walther is quite snappy.
