It has been a while since this part of the board was updated, so I thought I'd add a semi recent acquisition.
I bought/the wife gave me a little .17 fun gun. I was on the fence for years with these as I have a number of .22 rifles that shoot pretty well. Once I decided I'd go for a .17, then I had to decide if I was going to go for the HMR (necked down .22mag, or the HM2 necked down .22LR.) I chose the HM2 based on the cost of ammo and the intended purpose of the gun. This gun is basically for range use and occasional dispatching of critters around the farm. Yes the HMR ammo is much easier to find locally, but thanks to the internet, HM2 isn't hard to get and about 1/2 the cost of HMR. The HMR is obviously more powerful and has a longer range. That would be nice, but if I need more range and/or power, I have the .223, and numerous versions of .30.
So, continuing to ramble, I needed to decide on a gun after I chose the caliber. I was torn between several models, and eventually decided on the Savage, based on value. I was considering the CZ or Anschutz, but I figured I could add a nicer model later if I really like the gun/caliber. (and if the caliber has the longevity. I'd hate to spend a bunch of money on a gun and have the caliber go obsolete with no good way to reload for it.) The Savage is a nice gun, heavy barreled model, accutrigger, no iron sights, plastic stock. The barrel is free floated, but the nose of the stock is fairly flexible. If I were to use a shooting sling, I would pull the stock against the barrel.
I've taken it out a couple times, and it shoots well, easily MOA or better at 100yds. I have it zeroed at 100yds. For fun I tried it out to 200yds. The HM2 is not designed to go that far, but I tried it anyway. For me, on that day it was about a 18" hold over from the 100yd zero. I topped my gun with a 3-9x scope of medium quality.
I have to get it out and clean it, and I'll try to remember to take a picture of it.
