Hello Everybody,
It's been a while since I have posted any messages here, but I have an issue with one of my handguns that I am not sure how to deal with... or even if I should consider this to be an issue at all...
I have recently discovered that my S&W 686+ make strange sound when it is being tilted barrel down or barrel up. It is a quiet sound that seems to be reflecting movement of some small part inside of the main revolver body/frame. I do not hear it when I tilt gun to its left or right sides, but during transition from barrel up to barrel down and in opposite direction something is moving inside. This sound/movement seems to be unaffected by the state of the revolved. It is there whether revolver is cocked or not or even when it is in the state of fire (trigger pressed and hummer is all way down and firing pin protruding from the breech. I do not see any movement. I am sure that this is not cylinder itself, because it is not moving forward or backward. I have S&W 640 and it does not make this sound, but it is hidden hammer type, so construction is a bit different there...
I took off the grip just to make sure that there is nothing inside of it, but did not find anything there and something still was moving inside of the frame. There are three screws on the right side of the frame and I am almost tempted to open my revolver. The only thing that holds me from doing this is an idea that I might not be able to put it back together. I am pretty comfortable with 1911 design and have done a lot of modifications on my Springfield, but S&W revolver is not my area of expertise.
The revolver seems to be functioning normally, but this sound makes me a bit uncomfortable and suspicions about my gun. I checked firing pin, and it is not moving unless pushed by the hammer, so this is not firing pin spring... This gun has a built-in lock...Can it be it? I tried to lock and unlock gun, but this did not affect sound. When cylinder is open the sound is still there..... What can it be?
Is this type of sound/movement normal/acceptable on S&W 686+? Should I be worried or should I just ignore it? Should I try to open my revolver?
Thanks
