I am not a newby to owning and firing side arms, but it has been a while (years actually) since I have done either. My 1st handgun was a Taurus .357 with a 4 inch barrel. I eventually added a Smith and Wesson Compast 9MM to my selection. Now that I am in the position to own and carry a side arm again I am thinking of going with a Springfield Armory XD Service Model 4 (.40). Interested in hearing what suggestions everyone has on both caliber and model.
Thanks for your input!

.40 can be a bit snappy in a polymer semiauto. I'd say try it out before dropping the $500 or so. The XD is almost always positively reviewed from what I've seen. I think TMan has one (here).

I don't have anything in .40 however, I do have the XD and the XDM. I do like the XDM better than the XD, but both are good pistols.
There are too many parameters to say what is "best". Although there might be something you are unhappy with, you can always trade/sell it for something else. The first year depreciation on firearms isn't as bad as it is on automobiles. In fact if you hold on to it for a while, you may likely sell it for more than you paid for it.

I agree with taking it for a test drive. I think that if I would have done that with my 9MM I would have probably ventured elsewhere. Thanks for the input. It and anyone elses is and would be appreciated.

Other .40 cal, service sized polymer framed semi autos to compare it with would be the Glock 22, Walther P99, S&W M&P, HK USP, SigPro, and Steyr M40. I think there's a CZ offering too.

I've got an older XD in 357sig. I also bought a 9mm converion barrel for it. I use the 9mm more than the 357sig barrel as ammo is so much cheaper and easier to find. One of my friends owns the .40. As MLB pointed out, the recoil can be a little snappy if you are used to shooting steel framed 9mm. I like my xd very well. I prefer it over Glocks (that's why I own one and not a Glock.) The XDM is the newest version and has some nice additional features, not enough for me to get rid of my old one and trade up though.

I have tried quite a few handguns over the years for concealed carry. The best I have found is my full size Wilson CQB Elite 10mm. The profile of the 1911 makes it very favorable to me. Using an IWB holster, I can carry 9+1 and an additional 18 rounds on my other side. I can wear shorts and a T-Shirt and nobody can see it.
If I have to get dressed up and might have to take my jacket off, I carry a Kahr PM45 in an ankle holster. Not the best way to carry, but it is better than being unarmed.
