My oldest daugter and her husband lived in Mexico until just last Nov when they were trasferred back to his companys head office in Portland Oregon. They had to live in a gated compound which was surrounded by a 16 foot high wall and at least 3 heavily armed Jeeps with 50 cal machine guns on them at the gate. They said the gaurds were nice fellows but their prescence was a wee bit scary every day as people were being killed just blocks away down the street almost every day. This is in Saltillo where Freightliner has a factory for some of their heavy trucks. He still spends a week there every month now and is under constant gaurd there this week as this is it. I know he does NOT enjoy going back there at all as he has witnessed way too much and was terrified for my daughter and Grandson as well. Death has become a dailey event in that Country every day now due to the drug problems.

We have a hotel apartment in Gurgaon, India. Recall the attacks in Mumbai a couple of years ago. Well, our hotel general manager is from Australia. When you go into the hotel your belongings are X-rayed and you go through a metal detector. When a car, even the hotel cars, approaches the front, they have to stop. Cameras look under the car, and they make you open the trunk.
I mentioned to the hotel manager that there was no way he could stop a suicide bomber/vehicle, and all his security was just for show. He replied: "Well, I'm not about to have people out there with bloody guns". Fortunately, our apartment in in the rear of the building and on the 5th floor, as is the hotel managers apartment.
Of course if you come in the rear entrance, which is closer to the mall next door, just one guy with a wand. One improvement from the time I left in December to when I came back in February: to operate the elevator you now have to have your room door card, and swipe it across a reader.
This world is scary, and it is going to get a lot worse.
