My son was walking in the cornfield behind my house today, and found a bullet (just the bullet, not the cartridge) in the soil. He brought it home to me to look at. It was definitely fired, you can see the rifling marks on the sides and the nose is a little deformed from a soft impact. Probably from a muzzle loader. It has rather deep grooves around the waist, maybe for the lube?
I haven't mic'd the diameter, but it's about the size of a .45 by eye.

The majority of the older muzzle loaders had no rifling in the barrels so it would have to have been from a more modern gun I would suspect. Both of mine do have it. They may look old but are not at all. The guys here use them for hunting and the round ball for target mainly.

One of my shooting friends has a full auto Uzi, and on more than one occassion, we've found the bullets on the ground. Well, actually it was snow. We were firing at ~25yds and we could see the tracks of the bullets in the snow downrange. I thought it was pretty cool to collect out bullets. I suppose we could have done it with any handgun, but the sheer volume of bullets fired through the uzi made it easier to find. Blind squirrel and all that...

Sounds like that could be a expensive gun to own. Lots of ammo required to keep it Happy I suspect. They don't trust us up here with full auto toys as we probably would also have too much Fun with them. I know I would for sure.
