I bought a "rusty" Kimber model 82 from the CMP. I cannot find a spot of rust on it. There was a yellow residue from the preservative/protectant, but now rust. There was a VERY small scratch on the stock where some zealous inspector cut the box open and went too deep and cut through the bag and scratched the gun as well. This razor mark was listed as a possibility by the CMP. I've seen pictures of some much worse, and some with none at all. If you weren't looking for the scratch, you likely would never see it. As mentioned earlier, the CMP listed these as rusty, "May be minor or heavy rust in barrel, on bolt, or some other parts of the rifle"
"These rifles were produced for the U.S. Army between 1987 and 1990. Although these are still in the original manufacturer’s packaging and have never been used, many of the stock, barrels and receivers may have light scratches or razor cuts from when the protective bags were opened to conduct serial number inventory in the mid-90’s. This is a minor cosmetic deficiency that detracts slightly from the appearance, but does not affect the functioning of the rifle. This single shot .22 LR has an overall weight of 10.75 lbs., a length of 43 inches, an adjustable trigger, three butt plate spacers and a hand stop assembly. Rifle is complete with a Kimber rear aperture sight, a front sight with ten inserts and the original technical manual. These rifles are shipped as received by the CMP." odcmp.com/Sales/22targetsurplus.him
I did some of the initial sighting in yesterday with some cheap plinking ammo, and it looks like it will be a good shooter. I need to make a few more sight and trigger adjustments.
