...Firing Pin Stop Failure
...One of the very first problems I encountered while shooting a 1911 was having the firing pin stop drop below the firing pin. This caused the lower portion of the stop to drop behind the hammer during the slide's recoil.
The slide stop not only retains the firing pin, it also retains and aligns the extracter in place. I prefer the slide stop to be fitted, which would require one of oversize dimensions to begin with.
Evolution Gun Works has been manufacturing an oversize slide stop for the 1911 for years; It is one of those least expensive items that increases the reliability of the 1911.
Some pistolsmiths install a recessed set screw on the slide stop in order for retainment,(some LLAMA 1911s come with the set screws) some people install a heavier firing pin spring but that would not prevent the extractor from clocking with a loose stop. I really don't like the set screws because they can back out, preventing the hammer from striking the firing pin.
Everytime the firing pin is removed for cleaning on the 1911, the stop should be inspected for any play of looseness. My choice for replacement will always be with the EGW Oversized Slide Stop.
Not only will this Firing Stop will prevent the extractor from clocking, it will prevent the slide from locking up on the recoil. The firing on the 1911 works off a inertia, which means the Firing Pin Block is the only thing which holds the Firing Pin in place....in other words, As soon the hammer strikes the pin, there is nothing holding the firing pin stop in place. A faulty Firing Pin Stop will cause the firing pin stop to fall between the hammer spur and immediately put the pistol out commission, when you least expect it.
That is how I was introduced to the EGW Firing Pin Stop; Now I use it exclusively in most of my 1911 pistols.
"EGW firing pin stops are wider to prevent extractor movement. That means more reliable ejection! The stop is thicker to eliminate lateral movement as well. Radius corners prevent cracking so it lasts longer too. The back corner is square to slow the slide opening. 48 Rc scale. Fits Series 70, 80 in Super 10 and .45 (Blue)."
