“By calling attention to a well-regulated militia for the security of the Nation, and the right of each citizen to keep and bear arms, our founding fathers recognized the essentially civilian nature of our economy. Although it is extremely unlikely that the fear of governmental tyranny, which gave rise to the 2nd amendment, will ever be a major danger to our Nation, the amendment still remains an important declaration of our basic military-civilian relationship, in which every citizen must be ready to participate in the defense of his country. For that reason I believe the 2nd Amendment will always be important.”

John F. Kennedy Presentation
1963; serial number PT109
Inscribed: To JOHN FITZGERALD KENNEDY / 35th PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES / From COLT'S PATENT FIRE ARMS MFG. CO.
Manufacturer: Colt's Manufacturing Company
Engraver: Alvin A. White
87.118.52
When John F. Kennedy accepted the Democratic Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 1960, he declared that the nation was facing a "new frontier" of opportunities and challenges. Colt sought to capitalize on the phrase and introduced a target version of the Single Action Army, the New Frontier Model, in 1961. Kennedy assumed office that same year, and with approval of the White House, the company began developing this special presentation revolver for the president using that model. The gold-inlaid and engraved revolver, serial number PT109, was close to completion when Kennedy was tragically assassinated in 1963. All work on the revolver stopped, and it was soon polished and blued in an incomplete state. The revolver is a powerful reminder that firearms can be beautiful works of art or devastating tools of evil, depending on how they are used.
