Had to return the Winchester 94 I've been using for years, but it gives me an excuse to start looking at a new one. I'm thinking a Henry levergun is in order. Just not sure which one. I'd love one of those Henry "Originals", but not taking a 1300 gun into the woods either.

Love Henrys. Levers are classic/iconic American hunting guns. I agree with you, I don't think I could bring a $1300 rifle through the brush or tie it onto a rope to raise/lower it from a stand. I like the brass and octagon barrel, but would replace the rear sight with a peep sight in the rear scope mount. If I were to scope it, I'd probably choose the blued receiver, just because I think it'd look better. Not that the deer care either way.
For general purpose hunting/utility, the entry level bolt guns are a great value (Ruger American, Savage Axis, Axis II, Mossberg somethingorother), but certainly not as pretty as the Henry, and not available in the venerable 30-30.

I'm leaning towards the brass one too. Like the peep sight on the blued, but as you mentioned, I replaced the rear sight on my 22 levergun with a Marble's peep sight. Could do that with the 30-30 too.

Notice the reduced sight radius on the brass version. However it looks like it is tapped so you can put sights at the rear just like on the other version. Not sure what I would pick.

Here's my replica/reproduction in .45LC I bought it and a couple of single action reproduction revolvers from a friend that needed some money more than he needed the guns.

I did notice the shorter sight radius on the brass one, but I'd have to put a tang sight on it anyway. Not sure how that would look; I think they only come blued.

I like those. Not the tang peep I was thinking of, but nice!

Brass sights are extremely hard to shoot with especially if you have them front and rear. I had a 50 cal Kentucky style Black powder Rifle with Brass sights. The Sunlight would make them shine so much you cannot sight them in accurately. It makes the front sight hide in the shine of it. Very pretty to look at but not good for shooting purposes. I ended up selling the gun just last year. The Black sights do work much nicer for your eyes.

I do have some handguns that have the brass dot front side and I really like that. Not quite as good as fiber-optic, but the brass is stronger. Also, I've shot some fiber-optic in sunlight and they were just a tad too bright.

With both of them brass and in Daylight the front sight blends in and it shines way too much for you to sight it in correctly even if you are in the shade. I tried it many times by moving across the range and no matter where i was with both being Brass I could not shoot that gun or line it up properly at all unless i changed one of the sights. They look really nice on front and rear but almost impossible to lineup on target.

For once, my procrastination appears to have paid off. Henry recently started offering a case color hardened, octagon barreled, 30-30 levergun. (H009CC) I do love the brass, but it seems a bit much for the woods. I love the aged look of the case coloring, and this won't stand out so much while hunting. Should be able to get it out to the range this weekend. Can't wait to break it in.

Well, how did it shoot?
I'm heading out this weekend with a friend to test out his Ruger 77/44 for this upcoming deer season.
