Sitting here just south of New Delhi in our apartment on the 5th floor, the room started shaking, and it went on and on. Since it was lasting so long at first it was hard to believe that it was an earthquake. Then over the PA system was a message to evacuate the building. I didn't go. The shaking was nothing compared to the 4.9 a couple of years ago where the epicenter was close to us.
The surprising thing about this earthquake is that it is not on the Pacific "ring of fire". I've been telling my wife that I wanted to go to Kathmandu before ending our assignment here next month. She was busy, and we didn't go.
Good news in this disaster is the way that the Hindu government of India has responded to "do everything we can to help". They have already responded by sending planes and help. No word about help from Muslim Pakistan.

I am also glad you are safe and sound. My family is sending money to the relief funding for the folks there. Our hearts go out to them in their terrible time of need. I know they have had a lot of damage and death.

It really is bad. Apparently India has close political ties to Nepal, which is unlike their ties to Pakistan. They have really stepped up the efforts to aid in assist. There were also a lot of Indian citizens that were there and the Indian Air Force flew rescue flights in and out of Kathmandu.
I have a lot of respect for PM Modi. He now lets US citizens get Visas-On_Arrival in India. He is not a career politician. He used to own a tea store.

Thankfully they are still finding survivors who are still buried alive. I hope the relief efforts get to the people in the hills who need the help the most as well in a quick time frame. Apparently a lot of the goods are getting backlogged at the airports as they can not get it loaded onto the trucks or have enough good roads left to get it to the people. That makes it even worse. Whole villages have totally disappeared in many locations with very little evidence of their existence.
