More thought on Open Carry

Here in Texas the Open Carry law goes into effect on January 1st.  I've already expressed my thoughts on how I think it is a bad idea, but today I got to talk to a professional.

For sometime the American Airlines Employees Federal Credit Union has posted the Texas prescribed warning that you are not allowed to carry a concealed weapon and that no cash was kept at the facility.  However, since then, they have employed off-duty policemen, in uniform, to protect the facility.

Today we had nearly an hour wait to see our financial advisor so I had an opportunity to talk to the policeman and ask him his thoughts on open-carry.  What he told me surprised me.

None of the officers that he knows will open-carry when not on duty, but they will always carry concealed.  He went on to say that they expected an increase in gun violence where the criminals would go after some one that was carrying a gun in order to obtain it.  They expected a lot of people to be killed by their own guns.

In summary: people that want to be perceived as "bad-ass" may carry open, but they have a big target on themselves when they do so.

....Open carry is okay, if you are coming from a Gun Range and happen to stop off at a restaurant. For Self Defense, the element of surprise is concealed. TMan; You are right about these handguns being snatched from holsters, especially open top holsters. I agree about these "bad-ass" show offs, with their Plastic Pistols & Nylon Holsters.

I got to talking with him and he told me what a bad idea that most officers thought that open carry was. He said that "open carry" just makes you a target and he, nor any of his fellow officers that he knew, would ever open carry when they were off duty.

Thats the one thing no-one does up here is carry wether concealed or open. Only the most evil dorks carry and they usually end up being dummies and somebody gets hurt over some very stupid reason. We can not even carry when hunting. Strictly long gun only in the field. You need very special carry permits here to hunt with a handgun and no-body ever gets one it seems,
