We had a Gander Mountain grand opening in Beaumont today. In response Academy had a 30% off ALL firearms sale.
My dad bought an overunder shotgun for 289, a CZ 75-B in .40 S&W for $303. He's still there looking for a few more buys.
I got a Bersa Thunder 9mm. It was $175 out the door. I just couldn't afford anything else and it felt good. Easy trigger. I'll go shooting next week and let you know.
30% off. It just doesn't happen... except it did.

Every time the local Gander Mountain has any type of sale, you'll find "except firearm purchaces" in small print.

The local Gart Sports did the same thing when a Sportsman's Warehouse opened in my area. If I had more $$$ at the time I'd have picked up more than a Winchester Model 70...

I just can't find a good excuse to sell mine! Enjoy shooting it and it is reliable. I'm confident it would afford me protection at self-defense distances...

I asked the clerk and he told me what number to look for in the stock number to see if it was on sale or not. I checked them all an did not feel like there were any great deals.

Academy doesn't have that high a mark-up margin. If they are selling for 30% off, they are selling below their cost. We used to do that on occasion just to get things (TV's) off floor-plan because the boss needed the cash.
Grocery stores do that occasionally too, just to get you in the door because they know you will buy more.

Dad came back last night with another CZ 75 in .40 and a Bersa 9mm like mine.
He works at Academy in League City and they had to transfer a lot of their firearms to Beaumont for the sale. There were employees from at least four of the Houston stores to help.
While I was filling out my paperwork, I watched 9 people start paperwork or finish. between them there were over 20 guns. One guy had 4 Ruger pistols (various kinds), another guy bought two rifles.
I wish I had some money, but even with the sale (which was EVERYTHING), they didn't have much stock.
In other news, my local shooters supply had a FN 5.7. I thought they were illegal here. If I had $900, I would have bought it.
Did I mention that the Bersa is 17+1?

Did I mention that the Bersa is 17+1? OK, I've got to admit that when I saw that, I thought "Ol' KLM is thinking of the wrong handgun. The Bersa Thunder is a tiny 7 shot thing. A Thunder with a 17 rd capacity would have a grip like a soup can." I think Callahan was going down the same path with his "9mm short" comment/correction earlier. Turns out that Bersa has a whole line of "Thunders", including larger ones in 9mm and .40 cal, in addition to the .380 auto we're familliar with. For anyone not up on their Bersa Thunders (like me), here's the Bersa Thunder High Capacity in .40 (no pic of the 9mm is available at the Bersa site yet): Looks a bit like a marriage of a Hi-Power and a Beretta to me. ;D

It was news to me, obviously. They will sell a ton of those. Must have had them waiting for the end of the assault ban.

Yea, that's the one. It has a nice grip. It has a Decocker/safety switch. Take down is so simple compared to the CZs. One switch, done.
The double action pull is pretty long and rough. Way heavier than the P-01. The single action pull is almost like my Trailside, very short, very light.
More info and a review when I get to shoot it.

It will probably smooth out with a bit of fluff and buff and some use. They do a nice job on their grips. I notice instead of verticle ridges they have done checkering on the front of the grip. The Bersas, with the decocker safety and magazine disconnect are very safe pistols, especially good for a new shooters, IMHO. I can hardly believe he got that much pistol for $175. I was tempted, about six months ago, to buy a Springer Mil-Spec in stainless at my local Academy, but waited too long. Have decided since then that I probably would want a commander length anyway.
