Hi All -
I am looking for something to carry around to use against snakes. A shotgun is a little bulky to carry, so I was looking into a .45 with a 6" barrel loaded with shotshell.
Does anyone here have any experience with this setup? I'm curious what the pattern would be at 10/15/20'.
I've also seen revolvers that are made to hold a .410 shotshell. Does anyone have experience with these?
Do these alternatives sound reasonable or are there other options I should consider?

Hi James, welcome aboard.
I don't have any experience with anything except those little birdshot .22 shells, but take a look at the "Pocket Rocket" thread. I think there's a picture of a .410 derringer-type thing in there that might fit the bill.

I have the Bond Arms Cowboy Defender, and was shooting it today. My brother and nephew are here and I gave them a variety to shoot. I watched reactions and it was with the Bond that they smiled the most. They really enjoyed it. However, I would recommend the 3 1/2" barrel vs the 3" barrel that I have. They have a model called the Snake Slayer. Had I to do it over again, I would have bought that one because it will chamber the 3" shells vs the 2 1/2" that mine shoots. Of course I could change the barrel. They make a lot of different barrels and the barrels will fit any of their guns. www.bondarms.com/They alternate between the top and bottom barrels for each shot. I always set it so that the bottom barrel fires first so there isn't so much muzzle rise.

Can you carry one of those in a pocket or do you have some type of holster?

it has been a couple of years, but I remember seeing a revolver that had interchangeable cylinders, and one of them was a .410 shotshell. can't remember the name though, maybe it will come to me later.

JamesTX, Welcome to the Forum I've used the shotshell cartridges in .38/357, and even tried the 9mm shotshells which we had trouble with extractions. Maybe you could try something like a 4" barreled .357mag. DA Revolver loaded with the 38/357 shotshells for snakes, and have a speedloader with some 357mag. hollowpoints for self defense purposes, thats what we usually do on fishing trips.

Can you carry one of those in a pocket or do you have some type of holster? I carried in my pocket loose for awhile, but then was a little disturbed by putting change, car keys, etc. in the same pocket. I don't like the idea of scratching up the gun. So, I bought the in-the-pocket holster that Bond sells. It is made out of leather and I don't like it as well as the cloth one for my Seacamp. When you consider that it has a 3" barrel and 2 1/2" shell, there is a considerable spread of the shot in a short distance. If you were to use a longer barrel, revolver with a shot-shell, I doubt if you would get that amount of spread. In other words: it would be hard to miss that snake with this sucker. My son has a Ball Python, and I saw it attack a mouse once. Rather, I saw the snake; I saw the mouse; my son dropped the mouse in with the snake and I then saw the snake wrapped around the mouse. The hand might not be quicker than the eye, but the snake is. Gave me a whole lot of respect for snakes.

Well, I really like the idea of shooting 410 from a revolver or derringer.
But, my step father just told me that he has a 357 Mag that I can use. So, I'm going to pick up some shot shell for it and try that out. If I like it I can buy my own later.
Thanks.

Other than the Magnum Research and Thunder 5, are there any revolvers that shoot .410 shotgun shells?
