I was at the gunstore today looking over some .38spl JHP when I noticed some CCI 38spl ratshot. Hmmmmmmm says I. I've always liked the old snubbie Bellyguns, my way of thinking is that most lethal confrontations are at belly bumping distance anyway, and wouldn't that be the equivalent of a miniature shotgun?
I'm thinking about finding a shot out stainless 38spl snubbie to convert into a Fitz Special Ratshot Bellygun. It's my understanding that the ratshot will pretty much ruin a barrel after a while, so I'm thinking the thing to do is get one that is already shot out and rebuild the lockwork if need be.
Any thoughts?

Interesting idea, but doesn't fit in with your standard carry mantra. If the lawyers would give you a hard time about handloads or SXT ammo, they would probably have a field day with the guy that shot someone with a "concealed mini-shotgun"

On the other hand, if you stick that thing into his guts (and he isn't wearinging anything tougher than cotton), it will probably kill him.
The rat shot isn't powerful enough to penetrate bone, so it'll just bounce around in his torso until loosing energy.
I know a 20 gauge filled with light bird shot will liquify the insides of someone if the barrel is in contact with the belly of the target.
I don't know how much energy each pellet of ratshot would have. Also, a good leather jacket, zipped up, will be total protection, unless you shoved the gun up his nose... hmmm...

I also would worry about penetration from any distance. Should work on aggresive mice and cockroaches but probably would only make a BG really PO'ed.

Interesting idea, but doesn't fit in with your standard carry mantra. Actually, I'm looking at it as a possible escalation of force back-up gun. If the .45 doesn't do the trick, and the BG is on top of you cutting your throat, you are at muzzle contact distance. An auto will be pressed out of battery against the BG, so it's revolver time. Pressed into his belly or under his chin, it may leave him gasping for air at least. It's just a random thought when I suddenly saw that there was such a thing as a .38spl shot shell.

Its a bad idea to let a Bad guy within 21 feet of you , as a quick knife wheedling BG can slice you up BEFORE you get your weapon out. I would shoot the frangible bullets ,that dont ricochet , disintegrate after passing through a wall ( sheet of dry wall ).
A shot fired at someone will generate a lawsuit , so think long and hard. Pepper spray them and leave,,,,,, is the best for any attacker that hasn't injured anyone.
The snub nose .38 / .357 with a +P load is a fine belly gun, get the bobbed / covered hammer , shot from inside your coat , no slides to cycle / brass to eject. The lighter rigs will fit in an ankle holster.
